Jesus Christ is LORD!

July 18, 2021

Philippians 2:5-11 — Christ’s Self-Humiliation and Super-Exaltation (2) — God super exalted and confirmed Jesus as LORD because through his self-humiliation, his incarnation, obedience, and death on the cross Jesus did what only God can do. One day all will acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Yahweh, LORD, to the glory of God the Father. Until that day we must believe and take Jesus seriously as LORD. We must follow his example and command to serve others first in love and humility. We can do this because we have the mind of Christ Jesus.

This is part of our sermon series, Rejoice in the Lord Always, in which we will be walking through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. For this whole sermon series but especially this sermon I give credit to the following sources and authors that informed my sermons and whose ideas I sometimes used or adapted: Peter Thomas O’Brien, The Epistle to the Philippians: A Commentary on the Greek Text, New International Greek Testament Commentary (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1991). R. Kent Hughes, Philippians: The Fellowship of the Gospel, Preaching the Word (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books, 2007). Tom Wright, Paul for Everyone: The Prison Letters: Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon (London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 2004). D. A. Carson, Basics for Believers: An Exposition of Philippians (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 1996). Markus Bockmuehl, The Epistle to the Philippians, Black’s New Testament Commentary (London: Continuum, 1997).

Christ’s Self-Humiliation and Super-Exaltation (1)

July 11, 2021

Philippians 2:5-11 — Jesus Christ, himself God, denied and humiliated himself to save us. Therefore, God the Father super-exalted and appointed Him as Lord of the whole universe. Every soul from every age will confess that Jesus the Christ is Yahweh, Lord. All to the glory of God the Father. Christ radiates, shines forth the glory of God. We must have this same mind and heart of Jesus Christ, the God of self-giving love. We are called to serve others with his love.

Live as Citizens of Heaven

June 27, 2021

Philippians 1:27-30 — In Christ we are citizens of heaven not of the world. Therefore, we are called to live our lives in a manner worthy of our Lord and his kingdom. We do so by standing firm. We are able to stand firm in spiritual unity, through teamwork for the gospel, and with fearlessness in the face of opposition. We are involved in a cosmic battle in which we are called not only to believe and trust in our Lord but also to suffer for Him.

We Live and Die for Christ

June 20, 2021

Philippians 1:18b-26 — We live and die for Christ. Now is the time to live boldly, openly, and fearlessly for Christ so that He will be exalted in our lives and our deaths. As long as we live we are to live for Him in fruitful lives and ministry. We live for Christ by serving and living for others denying ourselves following the example of our Lord. We find our confidence and joy in the Lord.

Philippians 1:12-18a — We are called to proclaim Christ boldly and fearlessly in all circumstances. God uses all circumstances to advance the gospel for his kingdom and glory, even when we cannot see how or don’t have any hope. We are called to preach Christ crucified and risen for our salvation. We should do so with true and sincere motives, not out of selfish ambitions.

Pray For One Another

May 23, 2021

Philippians 1:3-8 — The sermon deals with the question, How and what do we pray for one another? We should pray as Paul prayed for the Philippians. We pray for one another with joy and love, giving thanks to God. We give thanks and pray with joy because we are partners in the gospel because we share in God’s grace with one another, and we love one another.
